Size staging to the train, not the space
The usual mistake is to build staging into whatever length happens to be left over and then discover the trains have to be shortened to match. That is backwards, because train length is the thing that makes a railroad feel like a railroad and it is the hardest thing to change later.
Decide the longest train you want to run first. In a home layout that is often set by the passing siding rather than by staging: a train that cannot fit in the passing siding cannot be passed, which removes the main reason to have two trains out at once. So the sensible order is to size the passing siding to the train, then make every staging track at least that long.
The second thing worth deciding early is how many staging tracks rather than how long. Two long tracks give you two trains. Four shorter ones give you four, and four short trains produce more operating interest than two long ones on almost every home layout.
Clearance at the end, and why it is not optional
The clearance in this calculator defaults to three inches and it is doing real work. A train that stops exactly at the end of its track is fouling the turnout at the throat, which means nothing else can move past it. On a staging ladder that blocks every other track behind it.
There is also the human factor: stopping a train precisely is harder than it sounds, especially in staging where you often cannot see the far end. Building in a few inches of margin means an overrun is a non-event instead of a derailment on the ladder.
If the staging is hidden, add more. A hidden track you cannot see into wants enough margin that a slightly long train is still clear, because discovering the problem means crawling under the layout with a torch.
